John 12:44–50 contains the final public sermon Jesus delivered. In this passage, Jesus declares who He is, why He came, and how people must respond to His words. This is not merely an explanation—it is a clear revelation of the choice every person must make between light and darkness, life and judgment. With the cross before Him, Jesus no longer speaks quietly but cries out loudly: “I have come into the world as light…” This cry is a desperate cry of love, a final invitation, and a final warning.
1. Jesus came as the “light” of salvation
[Verses 44–45] Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.
Jesus declares that He was sent by God and is one with God. To believe in Jesus is to believe in God; to see Jesus is to see God. For the religious leaders of that time, this was the greatest stumbling block. This is why they accused Jesus of blasphemy.
But this is the most basic and essential confession of our faith—that Jesus is God. He is the perfect light who reveals God.
Light shows the way to those who are lost, shines truth on those bound by sin, brings hope to the despairing, and gives life to those sitting in the shadow of death.
Jesus came into a world of darkness as the “light of salvation.”
[Verse 46] I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
Those who believe in Jesus no longer live in darkness. The moment we follow the light, darkness is no longer our home.
Corrie ten Boom, who suffered in a Nazi concentration camp after losing her family, confessed even in the deepest darkness: “In darkness, God is still light.” — Corrie ten Boom, The Hiding Place, 1971
She testified that even in the hellish camp, the light of Jesus held her. Light overcomes darkness. Jesus came as that light.
Beloved saints, are you in darkness, afraid, or cursing the darkness around you? Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “It is better to light a small candle than to curse the darkness.” — You Learn by Living, 1960
We often complain about the darkness of suffering, but lighting even a small candle is better. Yet Jesus is not a small candle—He is the light that illuminates the whole world. We believe in Jesus as God, as Savior, as the light who rescues us from darkness and brings us into life.
[Application] What part of my heart is still in darkness?
Jesus wants to enter that darkness. He says today, “You are not meant to live in darkness.” Tell the person next to you: “You are not meant to live in darkness. Call upon Jesus, the Light.”
2. Our “attitude” toward the Word determines eternity
Jesus says He did not come to judge the world but to save it.
[Verse 47] If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
But notice the first part: “If anyone hears My words…” Jesus reveals the purpose of His words—not to destroy us but to save us.
The critical issue is how we receive His words. Jesus does not judge the one who rejects His words, but He says there is someone who will judge.
[Verse 48] There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.
The judge is the spoken Word itself. Jesus is the Creator and the Word of God, yet here He distinguishes Himself from His words and personifies His words. But in truth, Jesus and His Word are one.
Jesus mentions two actions: rejecting Him and rejecting His words. We often imagine four categories:
(1) Reject Jesus and reject His words, (2) Reject Jesus but accept His words
(3) Believe Jesus and accept His words, (4) Believe Jesus but reject His words
But categories (2) and (4) do not exist. Whoever receives Jesus’ words believes in Jesus. Whoever rejects Jesus’ words rejects Jesus.
What, then, is the standard of judgment? The judge is the Word, and the standard is the Word. For believers, the Word is life; for rejecters, it becomes judgment. A standard does not change. Just as the law must remain firm in a courtroom, the Word is the unchanging standard of final judgment.
How is the result of judgment determined? Our attitude toward the Word determines our eternity. Those who receive the Word enter eternal light; those who reject it remain in eternal darkness.
When we hear the Word but delay obedience, we turn our backs on the light and return to darkness.
Beloved saints, remember: our rightful place is the light. We once lived in darkness, but Jesus called us into His light.
[1 Peter 2:9] But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
[Ephesians 5:8] For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
The world is held by the spirit of darkness, but we have been transferred into the kingdom of light through Jesus. Yet we still live in the world—God’s kingdom established within a dark world, like a forward base in a battlefield. We are in spiritual warfare. If we act independently and ignore orders, we become vulnerable to the enemy.
So what must we do? We must hold firmly to the words of our Commander, Jesus. We must know His Word and follow it.
Abraham Lincoln, the most respected U.S. president, led the nation through the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. In the darkness of war and division, he held onto Scripture. He said: “I believe the Bible. Without it, I would have been lost.” — Abraham Lincoln, Collected Works, 1863
The Word did not condemn Lincoln—it saved him. The Word of the Lord is always God’s saving hand reaching toward us. May every believer walk in the light today by holding onto the Word given to save us.
[Application] What Word is God giving me today that I keep delaying or avoiding?
Obedience is not easy, but remember: the Word of the Lord is God’s hand reaching out to save me.
3. The words of Jesus are God’s “command” and “eternal life”
[Verse 49] For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.
Jesus’ words are God’s words.
We often think of commands as burdens. Human commands can feel oppressive, and even in ministry, giving commands can feel heavy. As a pastor, I have often felt the weight of giving direction, especially when it involves the devotion of believers. That is why, over 25 years of ministry, I have found myself giving fewer commands and offering more encouragement instead. Encouragement gives people the opportunity to choose; commands demand obedience.
Some say, “Pastor, if you only encourage people, the church will not grow. You need strong commands and charisma to build the ministry.” But I believe encouragement—not command—is the biblical way to call believers to devotion.
[Romans 12:1] Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
What are the two key words? “Bodies” and “offer.” This is devotion. Did Paul command devotion? No—he urged it.
Why? Because devotion is the believer’s spiritual act of worship.
But in today’s passage, Jesus says His words are not encouragement but command. This feels heavy. Why does God command?
[Verse 50] I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.
God commands because His command is eternal life. Jesus’ words—God’s commands—are the gospel that gives life.
“Believe in Me.” “Listen to My words.” “Repent and believe.” These are commands because they give eternal life.
Sharing the gospel is not optional—it is the Lord’s command.
[Matthew 28:19–20] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
This is called the Great Commission. Jesus commanded it because it is the way to save people.
The mission of the church is to seek the lost, preach the gospel, and lead them to salvation. Some say, “We like our church as it is. We don’t want new people.” That is because they do not understand the mission. Evangelism is not optional—it is God’s command.
Beloved saints, remember: God does not command to burden us—He commands to save us. God’s commands are life-giving commands.
And what we must understand today is this: A life that obeys Jesus’ words—God’s commands—is a life that experiences eternal life.
Eternal life does not begin after death. Eternal life begins the moment we obey His Word.
Amy Carmichael, who served orphans in India for 55 years, wrote in Gold Cord: “A life in the will of God is the safest and most glorious life.” — Amy Carmichael, Gold Cord, 1932
A life of obedience may include suffering, but it is filled with the light of eternal life. May you walk with the Lord today, experiencing eternal life through obedience to His Word.
[Application] Do I feel the Word as a burden or as life? Am I experiencing eternal life today through obedience?
Jesus cries out in His final public sermon: “I have come into the world as light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness.” The Light—Jesus—still desires to enter our darkness: the darkness of sin, wounds, fear, wandering, and weariness. Invite Him into that darkness and let His light shine.
Jesus says, “You are not meant to live in darkness. I came as light for you.”
Today, will you choose darkness or light? Those who follow Jesus, the Light, experience eternal life, overcome darkness, and see God. May every believer here live such a life.
