Today’s passage is the last of the seven “Ego Eimi” statements in the Gospel of John. Do you remember the seven “Ego Eimi”? (1) I am the bread of life (John 6:35), (2) I am the light of the world (John 8:12), (3) I am the gate for the sheep (John 10:7), (4) I am the good shepherd (John 10:11), (5) I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25), (6) I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), (7) I am the true vine (John 15:1).

In today’s passage Jesus says He is the true vine. [Verse 1] I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. Then He explains the relationship between Himself and His disciples in verse 5. [Verse 5] I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. He calls Himself the vine and His disciples the branches.

What is the most important truth in today’s passage about the vine and the branches? If you understand this one thing, you understand everything: “Remain in Me.” “Stay attached.” Branches simply need to stay attached to the vine. We simply need to remain in the Lord. Remember this as you hear today’s message.

 

1. The gardener desires much fruit.

Abraham Lincoln once said a famous phrase describing the essence of democracy: “Government of the people, by the people, for the people.” It means the government belongs to the people, is formed by the people, and exists for the people.

The vineyard is similar. In verse 1 Jesus teaches something important: [Verse 1] I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener. Why does Jesus say the Father is the gardener? Because the owner of the vine is the gardener. Jesus places His identity and purpose in the hands of the Father, the owner. The vineyard belongs to the gardener, is created by the gardener, and bears fruit for the gardener.

What kind of vineyard does the gardener truly desire? Not a place good for playing. Not a place with beautiful scenery. Not a vineyard with large vines. The gardener desires a vineyard that bears much fruit. That is why verse 8 says that when we bear much fruit, the Father is glorified. [Verse 8] This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be My disciples. For God to be glorified means His will, His plan, and His purpose are fulfilled.

We often pray, “Lord, I want to live a life that gives You glory.” How do we live such a life? By fulfilling God’s will for us. When God’s plan and purpose for our lives are fulfilled, we live a life that glorifies Him.

So what is God’s will, plan, and purpose for our lives? God sent Jesus Christ, the life, so that whoever believes in Him receives eternal life. What is God’s will for those who have received life? To share that life and bear many fruits of life.

A few months ago, a seminary student taking a church-planting course asked to interview me as a church planter. During the interview he asked, “Do you have a desire to plant another church?” I answered with this illustration: What is the purpose of an apple tree producing apples? Certainly, God gave fruit-bearing trees so people could eat. But is that the only purpose? Inside every apple is a seed. [Genesis 1:11] Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it. Why did God place seeds inside fruit? Because seeds contain life. The apple seed exists so that life can produce more life—another apple tree.

God created sea creatures and birds and said: [Genesis 1:22] Be fruitful and increase in number. He said the same to humans: [Genesis 1:28] Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth. Does the fact that the command “be fruitful and multiply” is not explicitly spoken to plants or land animals mean that they are not supposed to be fruitful and multiply? No. It is simply omitted. God also gave plants, animals, and human beings seeds that contain life so that they too would be fruitful and multiply. Therefore, being fruitful and multiplying on this earth is God’s will and purpose for every living being that carries the seed of life.

The same is true for the church. What makes the church different from the world? The church has life. And the nature of life is to be fruitful and multiply. Life produces life. The eternal life given through Jesus Christ must give life to many more people. Therefore, the church must give birth to more churches. I do not know whether I will personally plant another church, but if God desires it… Even if it is not me, if God raises another pastor through this church and sends him to plant a church where God desires, I want to support it wholeheartedly.

Beloved saints, remember this one thing: God desires that we bear much fruit of life on this earth. Believe that He is glorified through this.

[Application] Do I know God’s will and plan for my life? Is life flowing through me and producing fruits of life?

 

2. Fruit grows only on branches that have life.

[Verse 5] I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. Here Jesus distinguishes between the vine (the trunk) and the branches. Every branch is attached to the trunk. Where does fruit grow? Not on the trunk, but on the branches. If a branch falls off the trunk, it cannot bear fruit and will die.

But even branches that appear attached may not bear fruit. Why? Because although they look connected outwardly, inwardly the flow of water and nutrients is blocked, diseased, or dead. Such branches cannot bear fruit.

So what happens? Verse 2 tells us: [Verse 2] He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

Branches that bear no fruit are cut off. Removing such branches allows the remaining branches to bear more fruit.

When we hear this, we may feel fear. “What if God cuts me off? What if I fall away from Jesus and end up in hell?” Some false teachers use this verse to claim that even saved believers can be cut off and lost if they fail to produce fruit. One such group is led by Byun Seung-woo, formerly “Great Faith Church,” now renamed “Beloved Church.” This is false theology. Many people are misled by such teaching and live in fear instead of enjoying the joy of salvation.

Does this verse mean that believers can be cut off? Look at verse 3. [Verse 3] You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Who are “you”? The disciples of Jesus. This includes all believers today. We heard the gospel, repented of our sins, and received Jesus as our God, Savior, and Lord. Such people have been forgiven and are already clean.

So who are the branches that are cut off? Clearly not believers. Then who are they? The key is in verse 1. [Verse 1] I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener.

The key word is “true.” The Greek word is alēthinē (ἀληθινή), meaning not merely “true” versus “false,” but “complete” versus “incomplete,” “real” versus “shadow.” In the Old Testament, the vine often symbolized Israel. Jesus is saying He is the true Israel—the complete fulfillment of God’s kingdom.

Israel believed they were saved by keeping the law, but the law was meant to reveal sin and lead people to long for the perfect Messiah. Now the Messiah has come—the true vine. Those who reject Jesus, the false people of God, the fruitless nominal branches, the dead branches—these are the ones the gardener cuts off.

Who are we? We are those who have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus through the gospel and grafted into the true vine. We are true branches. We are living branches with life because of Jesus’ blood.

And the true vine, Jesus, bears fruit through the true branches—us. May many fruits of life be borne in our lives today.

[Application] Am I a living true branch grafted into Jesus, the true vine? Am I a fruit-bearing branch?

 

3. Let the Lord’s word remain in you always.

We are indeed God’s children, saved by repenting of our sins and receiving Jesus as Lord, and we are attached to the true vine. Yet sometimes we feel we are not bearing fruit. We wonder, “Why do I have no fruit?” This is a good question because it shows a desire for God to be glorified through our lives.

When branches bear much fruit, the gardener is glorified. So how do we bear much fruit?

The most important secret is in verse 4. [Verse 4] Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.

To remain in Jesus is to stay attached to the vine. But this phrase may feel strange. If we are grafted into the vine, how can we fall off? Why must we try to remain? Yes, Scripture teaches that once we are saved, the Lord never lets us go. [John 10:28–29] No one can snatch them out of My hand… no one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand. When I realized this truth long after believing in Jesus, I was overwhelmed with joy. God’s love for me is so great and amazing.

But there is one dangerous misunderstanding: “Since God chose me, saved me, and will produce fruit through me, I do not need to do anything.” God did not make us robots. He made us in His image—meaning He made us capable of relationship and love. Love is true love when a person chooses the other with personal will and intention. God’s love is not based on our conditions or on whether we are worthy of being loved. It is a “nevertheless” kind of love.

[Romans 5:8] But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Love is a relationship. The relationship between God and us is a relationship of the Word and obedience. Before God looked at anything about us, He already loved us, and to save us, the Word—God Himself—became flesh and came to this earth and gave His life for us. In that love relationship, what does God desire from us? That we obey His Word. That we believe, trust, and follow the perfect Word of God. When we do so, we say that we are “in communion” with God.

Do children and parents “remain” in each other? Parents sacrifice out of love, but children may ignore or reject them. Then parents feel disconnected. Children may feel hurt and think parents do not care. Then children feel disconnected.

A connected relationship is built on trust, compassion, love, listening, and responding. They try to listen carefully to each other’s words, and through those words they seek to understand the other person’s heart and offer comfort. They willingly sacrifice their own time and resources to accomplish what the other desires.

This is what a truly connected relationship looks like. It is a life of dwelling in one another. There is a phrase young people who love each other often use these days. “I have you inside me” is, in my opinion, a very biblical expression. That is what love is. Loving only what is outwardly visible is not true love. True love must flow inward. You must hold the other person’s words inside your heart. Heart must connect with heart.

So how do we remain in Jesus? Through His word. [Verse 7] If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

We must read Scripture deeply, meditate on it, learn the heart of the Lord, and pray according to His word. When we know His heart and ask according to His word, amazing things happen: “Ask whatever you wish, and it will be done.”

Recently I told a young adult returning to Korea: “Always long for the place of grace where the Word is present. Make it your priority.” Long for worship, even if you must sacrifice other things. God pours amazing grace there. He produces abundant fruit of life. May all our members bear such fruit and give great glory to God.

[Application] Am I well-connected with the people I love? What must I decide today to remain in the Lord?
