[Sunday, November 2, 2025] “WHAT SORT OF CHURCH ...?” | 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

Greetings …

 

On this occasion of your church’s second birthday … as well as celebrating, it’s also a good time for thinking about the church’s future …reflecting, evaluating, dreaming, setting goals …

 

Here’s a question to ponder as you move into your third year together …

 

WHAT SORT OF CHURCH ...?

 

As you think about this Hope of Heaven Baptist Church that you are part of:  What sort of church are you?

   What sort of church should you be … do you want to be?

 

I’m going to read this morning the opening words of the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the church in Thessalonica  (1 Thessalonians 1:1-10, Good News Bible)

 

Paul wrote this letter to encourage new believers in their faith in Jesus, and in living as His followers, in the midst of persecution ...

 

If I asked you to write a description of what a church should be like ...

What would you include?

What would be important for you?

 

In those verses I just read, there’s a description of what a “good” church is like …

there’s actually a “church profile” outlined, for us to aim for and be guided by.

 

Interestingly, there’s no mention of music, or worship; nothing is said about the quality of small groups or the depth of fellowship; there’s no comment on the children’s or youth ministry ...  Paul says nothing about the preaching, or the programmes or community ministries; he doesn’t even mention how spiritual gifts are evident in the life of the church …

 

None of those things which we tend to think are so important, and often go looking for when we’re ‘choosing’ a church, a church that will meet our needs … and wants –

none of these things are mentioned.

 

It’s a bit like buying a house:  we make a list of things we want, we draw a mental picture; and then we try and find something as close as possible to that ideal ...

 

Likewise, when we’re trying to find a church to join – we work out what we want, and then go looking … and we tick things off the list ...

 

BUT … it is vital to keep reminding ourselves what’s really important in the life of a church community:

 

So ... What are the things which make for a good church?

 

Actually – the answer is much deeper, and much more significant, than music, youth programmes, and so on …

 

The answer lies in the character … and the attitudes … individually and collectively … of the people who make up the church.

 

The first feature of such a church?

 

faith that is put into practice (1:3)

 

That’s the key test of any Christian, and any church:

Is the faith lived out?  

Do the deeds match the words?  

Is there any substance to the claim that “we follow Christ” … ?

 

That is an ENORMOUS question, for all of us …

and certainly for you, as a church, as you move into this next season

of your life together …

 

Paul is able to write: ‘I came not with words only, but with power and the Holy Spirit.’ (1:5)

 

What he said he believed, fitted with what was seen in his life. He didn’t just talk about following Jesus; the way he lived evidenced the power of God at work in his life.

 

And, Paul was delighted that he could commend these new Christians in Thessalonica for the same thing: ‘We remember … how YOU put your faith into practice’

 

Probably the most tragic thing in the history of the Christian Church, since it was established 2,000 years ago, is that so often, it hasn’t put its faith into practice ...

 

So often, the life of the Church has looked nothing like the life of the Christ it claims to represent ...

 

The common criticism of the Church is ‘You Hypocrites!’ …In other words – you people who don’t put your faith into practice! Who don’t practice what you preach!

 

All of us who claim to be followers of Jesus must regularly assess our lives ...

And this is a good time for you together as a church to do that …

 

Is there something about the way you think, act, speak, react, live, that marks you out as different – as people in whom something of the nature of Jesus can be seen?

Do you put your faith into practice ... ?

 

Or: Do you look the other way when you see someone in need?

Do you shout and gesture when someone cuts you off on the road?

Do you join in the destructive gossip with everyone else at work?

Do you harbour grudges and resentment in your heart?

Just like everyone else …

 

DO YOU PUT YOUR FAITH INTO PRACTICE?

 

Listen to this …

 

‘He was a man who made free use of Christian vocabulary. He talked about the blessing of the Almighty, and about the great Christian credal statements, which would become the pillars of his new government. He assumed the earnestness of a man weighed down by a sense of God-given destiny and historic responsibility. He handed out pious stories to the press. He showed his tattered Bible, and declared that he drew the strength for his great work from this book. Scores of pious people in his nation welcomed him as a man sent from God. His name was Adolf Hitler.  

 

The Bible says:

 

What good is it for someone to say that he has faith if his actions don’t prove it? Can such faith save him? Suppose there are brothers or sisters who need clothes or don’t have enough to eat. What good is there in saying to them: “God bless you!  Keep warm and eat well!” – if you don’t give them the necessities of life? So it is with faith:  if it is alone and includes no actions … IT IS DEAD! (James 2:14-17) 

 

Put your faith into practice!

 

Let what you say you believe actually shape who you are, how you live ...

your attitudes, behaviour, choices …

 

There’s one other thing about putting your faith into practice:

 

It doesn’t just mean doing good, being kind, showing the grace and mercy of God to others …

 

Putting faith into practice also involves taking risks ...

trusting God and being obedient to His directions …

 

That is putting faith into practice. It’s often said that faith is spelt R I S K 

 

The African impala is a wonderful animal …It’s able to jump as high as 10 feet and more off the ground, and to leap distances of more than 30 feet. It’s an incredible animal! Yet this magnificent beast can be kept in a zoo enclosure with walls only 3 feet high. Why?  

Because the impala will not jump if it cannot see the place where its feet will land!  

So ... it remains captive.

There are lots of “impala Christians” – who are not willing to jump unless they can see exactly where they are going to land!

 

Put your FAITH into PRACTICE! As an individual ... and as a church ...

 

The second feature of the church Paul describes is

 

  love that leads to hard work (1:3)

 

When Paul looked at this group of relatively new believers in Thessalonica, he saw people whose love for God was producing lives of service.

 

These believers were working hard for the gospel …

putting their heart and soul into serving Jesus …

not to try to earn merit points, but because they loved Jesus, and wanted to serve Him.

 

Their LOVE inevitably led to hard work! That’s always how it is with genuine love … Love is such an over-used word in our culture. It has become such a cheapened word, really ...

 

That ‘cheapening’ of the word ‘love’ is particularly seen in the common linking of the words “love” & “but” …

 

If you stop and listen, you’ll hear it all the time:

I love my kids, … but I just can’t stay with wife any longer.

I still love my wife, … but I’ve met someone else, and I’ve got to be with her.

I love God, … but I just can’t do what He’s asking me to do; it’s too hard.

 

In the Greek language which the New Testament was originally written in,

there are a number of different words which are all translated by the one English word “love”.

 

The word here (in 1Thessalonians 1:3) is the word agape … which means God-like love.

 

Love that has no limits, no conditions; love that is totally other-focused:

It’s not – what do I want, but what’s the best for the other person?

 

With agape, there are no buts – it’s ‘full stop love’: I LOVE … Full Stop!

 

It’s Love that automatically leads to hard work, service, self-sacrifice …

these things just come naturally to agape love – because there are no buts.

 

That hard work will look different for different people – because we have different gifts, callings, life circumstances, personalities, and so on.

 

For some – love will lead to the hard work of prayer …

labouring in prayer, because of love – for God, and for people.

 

The prayer warrior is just as much a hard worker for God as the church kitchen co-ordinator, or the person who puts the chairs out each week for the service …

 

What’s important is that each person finds their God-given place of service, their calling – and works hard at it, gives their best – out of love, as a love offering to God.

 

Such service, such loving hard work, is worship –

Paul, writing to the Romans, says: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to His service, and pleasing to Him. This is the true worship that you should offer. (Romans 12:1)

 

First and foremost, worship is not about what we do here: music, songs, and so on …

 

First and foremost, genuine worship is love that leads to hard work …the hard work of living your life as a sacrifice to God – trusting, obeying, giving, serving.

 

The third quality of the life of the Christian and the church described in this opening chapter of 1 Thessalonians is:  hope that is firm (1:3) …

 

Literally, enduring hope, hope that does not give up. That is so crucial in the Christian life, individually and together as a church community …The strong, vibrant, alive church will be a church that is full of hope.

 

You’ve got that word in your church name: Hope of Heaven Baptist Church …That’s great!

 

But for that to be a quality seen not only in the church’s name, but in the church’s life, you must understand what hope actually is. It’s nothing to do with wishful thinking, vague dreams of what might be …

 

Hope is a tremendously important word in the New Testament. Just as important as faith – because hope really is faith put in the future tense. Faith is primarily a present, day-by-day thing … I live by faith, I trust God each day for all that I need, I put myself in His hands for today … Hope is the transmitting of that confidence in God into the future.

It’s the placing of all that lies ahead, all that unknownness stretching out before us,

into God’s hands, believing that His ways are good, His purposes for us are perfect,

our destiny in Him is supreme.

 

Christian hope for the future is an unshakable confidence, not based on what I hope might happen, but based on all I know and have experienced of God’s love, power, purposes and faithfulness in the past. Such hope is firm; it endures; it doesn’t give up; it doesn’t crumble under pressure; it is not dependent on circumstances.

 

That doesn’t mean it’s never challenged … But nonetheless, Christian hope for the future will not be overwhelmed by the struggles of the present.

 

Rather, Christian hope for the future keeps choosing to look at the past, to remember and meditate on all God has done previously … and on the basis of that, chooses to continue to hope in God for the future, even when the future looks bleak and dark.

 

That’s why it is so important to keep telling stories of God’s faithfulness and mercy …

That’s the God we serve; that’s the God we trust, for today and for the future –

for this next season in the life of Hope of Heaven Baptist Church …

That’s the God in whom we hope.

 

So …

Faith that’s put into practice …

Love that leads to hard work …

and Hope that is firm …

 

These qualities will make for a great church!

 

This kind of faith, love and hope are in fact the hallmarks of the church that is genuinely “the Body of Christ”.

 

And together they lead to …… 1 more quality, which is the fourth characteristic highlighted in 1 Thessalonians 1: joy in suffering (1:6)

 

Paul says in his letter to this group of Christians: … even though you suffered much, you received the message with the joy that comes from the Holy Spirit.

 

How is it possible to be joyful in the midst of suffering? Again, we need to understand what joy actually is. 

 

Joy is not constant laughing and joking, just looking on the bright side of everything, always being unflinchingly happy and bright and cheerful, no matter what.

 

Joy is a deep quality that enables you, even in the midst of suffering and calamity and pain, to still discern the wonder of God’s grace … the beauty of life and relationships …

 

And thus to rejoice in God’s blessings, and the hope He gives for the future.

 

Going back again to the Greek language in which this letter was written, we find that the words for “joy” and for “grace” are very similar …

They are basically the same word, charis, with slightly different endings.

 

Grace is literally something which brings joy …And right there is the secret of joy in the midst of suffering …seeing, even in midst of pain and trial and grief, God’s awesome grace, extended to me, a sinner …

 

This grace, this totally undeserved love and acceptance and friendship with God, has not been withdrawn, has not withered and died, even though sometimes it may feel like it during life’s hard times; the secret to knowing joy in the midst of suffering is focusing on that awesome grace of God, which He has poured into your life, freely, unreservedly –

and He is still doing so ...

 

Do you know what I’ve discovered?

 

The moments of greatest and deepest and most precious joy often occur in the midst of life’s greatest and deepest trials …

 

It’s a paradox, but it’s profoundly true.

 

Somehow, the blessings that flood our lives every day, but which we’ve become overly accustomed to – relationships with people we love deeply but have begun to take for granted; the glory of God’s Creation that we’ve stopped noticing; the great pleasure of hugging a friend, enjoying a good meal, sharing a joke, praying with your kids at bedtime …

 

somehow, during times of trial, fear, loss, pain, the joy of these “everyday blessings” is often exponentially enhanced.

 

They become wonderful oases in the desert.

 

There is a mysterious link, it seems to me, between joy and suffering …That’s not to ‘over-glamourise’ times of suffering and sadness – They are horrible, scary …

 

BUT …

 

Right in middle of the greatest darkness, you can find some incredible experiences of joy & blessing, as you endeavour to walk with God through that darkness, and as His love and grace flow through others into your life.

 

Faith that’s put into practice …

 

Love that leads to hard work …

 

Hope that is firm …

 

and Joy in suffering …

 

That’s what a church SHOULD be like …

 

And the result, the by-product of these qualities developing in a church?

 

Effective Mission

 

Paul says:

the message about the Lord has gone out from you throughout Macedonia & Achaia, and the news about your faith in God has gone everywhere!

 

You’re famous!

 

Because of what God is doing in you, because of the evidence of His transforming power in your lives, YOU are having an impact on the WORLD.

 

Your faith that is shown to be genuine by being put into practice …

your hard-working, self-giving love …

your hope that is firm and enduring …

and your deep joy, even in suffering …

 

these things are causing a stir, they’re making people sit up and take notice, they’re getting the world’s attention …

and they are attracting people to Jesus!

 

The foundation for effective mission is that we have something people want,

Something people find attractive.

 

These things … Faith …, Love …, Hope …, Joy…,  will attract people.

 

So … I encourage you to continue to work at becoming that sort of church, that sort of community …

 

To continue to invite and allow and open yourselves to God to change and develop you …

 

FOR HIS GLORY and THE BUILDING OF HIS CHURCH!

여러분, 안녕하세요…

오늘은 여러분 교회가 두 살이 되는 특별한 날입니다. 축하하는 날이기도 하지만, 동시에 앞으로 교회가 어떤 모습이 될지 생각해 보기 좋은 시간입니다.
돌아보고, 평가하고, 꿈꾸고, 목표를 세우는 시간이죠.

여러분이 함께 3년 차로 들어가는 이 시점에서 생각해볼 질문이 있습니다.

어떤 교회가 되어야 할까?

여러분이 속한 이 Hope of Heaven Baptist Church를 생각할 때: 우리는 어떤 교회인가? 그리고 우리는 어떤 교회가 되어야 하는가? 어떤 교회가 되고 싶은가?

오늘 아침 저는 사도 바울이 데살로니가 교회에 보낸 첫 번째 편지의 첫 부분을 읽었습니다.

(데살로니가전서 1:1-10, Good News Bible)

바울은 이 편지를 예수님을 믿기 시작한 새 신자들을 격려하고, 박해 속에서도 예수님을 따르는 삶을 살도록 하기 위해 썼습니다. 

만약 제가 여러분에게 “좋은 교회는 어떤 모습이어야 하나요?”라고 묻는다면… 여러분은 뭐라고 쓰시겠어요? 무엇이 중요합니까?

지금 읽은 말씀 안에는 ‘좋은 교회’가 어떤 모습인지 설명되어 있습니다. 우리가 목표 삼고 따라가야 할 교회의 모습, ‘교회 프로필’이죠.

흥미롭게도, 그 말씀에는 예배 음악이나 워십팀 이야기, 소그룹이나 교제의 깊이, 다음세대 사역, 설교나 프로그램, 지역사회 사역, 또는 교회 안에서 나타나는 은사들에 대한 이야기가
전혀 없습니다.

우리가 중요하다고 생각하고, 교회를 선택할 때 많이 따지는 요소들이지만… 바울은 그런 것들을 전혀 언급하지 않습니다.

마치 집을 살 때 우리가 원하는 조건 리스트를 만들고 그 이상적인 집을 찾으려고 하는 것과 비슷하죠.

교회를 찾을 때도 우리는 "내가 원하는 것"을 생각하고 체크리스트를 들고 교회를 돌아다니곤 합니다.

하지만… 교회 공동체 안에서 정말 중요한 것이 무엇인지 계속 기억해야 합니다.

그렇다면, 좋은 교회를 만드는 요소는 무엇일까요?

사실 답은 예배 음악이나 청소년 프로그램보다 훨씬 깊고 중요합니다. 답은 바로 교회를 이루는 사람들의 성품과 태도입니다. 개인적으로도, 공동체적으로도요.

좋은 교회의 첫 번째 특징? 믿음을 실제로 행동으로 보여주는 것 (1:3)

이것이 모든 그리스도인과 모든 교회의 핵심 기준입니다: 믿음이 실제 삶에서 나타나는가? 말과 행동이 일치하는가? “우리는 예수님을 따라갑니다”라는 고백에 실제 내용이 있는가? 이것은 우리 모두에게, 그리고 새로운 단계로 나아가는 여러분 교회에 매우 중요한 질문입니다.

바울은 이렇게 말할 수 있었습니다: “너희에게 말로만 이른 것이 아니라 또한 능력과 성령과 큰 확신으로 된 것임이라” (1:5)

그가 믿는다고 말한 것과 그의 삶에서 나타난 모습이 일치했습니다. 그는 예수님을 따른다고 말만 한 것이 아니라, 그의 삶에서 하나님의 능력이 드러났습니다.

그리고 바울은 데살로니가 교회 성도들에게도 이렇게 칭찬합니다: “우리는 여러분이 믿음을 행동으로 옮긴 것을 기억합니다.”

지난 2,000년 동안 교회 역사에서 가장 슬픈 사실은, 교회가 너무 자주 믿음을 행동으로 보여주지 못했다는 것입니다. 교회가 대표한다고 말하는 예수님의 모습과 전혀 다른 모습을 보여준 경우가 너무 많았습니다.

세상이 교회를 향해 자주 하는 비판: “너희는 위선자들이다!” 즉, “말한 대로 살지 않는다”라는 말입니다.

예수님을 따른다고 말하는 우리는 정기적으로 우리의 삶을 점검해야 합니다. 그리고 지금이 교회로서 함께 점검하기 좋은 때입니다.

여러분의 생각, 행동, 말, 반응, 삶 속에서 예수님의 모습이 보이나요? 믿음을 행동으로 옮기고 있나요? 아니면…도움이 필요한 사람을 보고 외면합니까? 도로에서 누가 끼어들면 소리치고 화내나요? 직장에서 다른 사람들과 함께 똑같이 험담하나요? 마음속에 미움과 원망을 품고 있나요? 다른 사람들과 똑같이…?

믿음을 실제로 실천하고 있습니까?

다음 이야기를 들어보세요.

그는 기독교 용어를 자유롭게 사용하였습니다.전능하신 하나님의 축복에 대해 말하였고,또 자신의 새로운 정부의 기둥이 될 중요한 기독교 신앙 고백들에 대해 이야기하였습니다.그는 하나님께서 주신 사명과 역사적인 책임감으로 무겁게 마음을 가진 사람처럼 진지한 태도를 보였고, 언론에게 경건한 이야기들을 전하였습니다. 그 사람은 낡고 해진 성경책을 보여주며, 자신의 위대한 일을 해낼 힘을 이 책에서 얻는다고 선언하였습니다.그 나라의 수많은 독실한 사람들은 그 사람을 하나님께서 보내신 사람이라고 환영하였습니다.그 사람의 이름은 아돌프 히틀러였습니다.

성경은 말합니다: “내 형제들아 만일 사람이 믿음이 있노라 하고 행함이 없으면 무슨 유익이 있으리요 그 믿음이 능히 자기를 구원하겠느냐  만일 형제나 자매가 헐벗고 일용할 양식이 없는데 너희 중에 누구든지 그에게 이르되 평안히 가라, 덥게 하라, 배부르게 하라 하며 그 몸에 쓸 것을 주지 아니하면 무슨 유익이 있으리요 이와 같이 행함이 없는 믿음은 그 자체가 죽은 것이라” (야고보서 2:14-17)

믿음을 행동으로 옮기십시오!

여러분이 믿는다고 말하는 것이 여러분의 존재와 삶을 진짜로 바꾸어야 합니다. 태도, 행동, 선택이 변해야 합니다.

그리고 믿음을 행동으로 보인다는 것은 착한 일을 하거나 친절하게 대하는 것만 의미하지 않습니다.

때때로 믿음은 위험을 감수하는 것입니다. 하나님을 믿고 순종하며 한 걸음 내딛는 것—그것이 믿음의 실천입니다. 그래서 어떤 사람들은 믿음의 철자를 이렇게 말합니다: R I S K (위험)

아프리카 임팔라라는 동물이 있습니다. 뛰면 3미터 넘게 뛰고 한 번에 9미터 이상 뛸 수 있습니다. 놀라운 동물입니다! 그런데 동물원에서는 1미터 정도의 울타리만 있어도 갇힙니다.
왜냐하면 임팔라는 착지할 곳이 보이지 않으면 절대 뛰지 않기 때문입니다. 그래서 울타리 안에 갇혀버립니다.

교회에도 이런 “임팔라 크리스천”들이 많습니다. 착지할 곳이 보이지 않으면 즉, 결과가 확실하지 않으면 믿음으로 뛰지 않는 사람들이죠. 그러니 믿음을 행동으로 옮기십시오! 개인으로서도, 교회로서도요.

 

두 번째로 사도 바울이 말하는 교회의 특징은 사랑이 열심히 섬김으로 이어지는 것 (1:3) 입니다.

바울이 데살로니가의 비교적 새로운 그리스도인들을 보았을 때, 그는 그들이 하나님을 사랑했기 때문에 섬김의 삶을 살고 있다는 것을 보았습니다. 이 믿는 사람들은 복음을 위해 열심히 일하고 있었어요. 예수님을 섬기기 위해 마음과 영혼을 다하고 있었습니다. 칭찬을 받기 위해서가 아니라, 예수님을 사랑했고 그분을 섬기고 싶었기 때문이죠.

그들의 사랑은 자연스럽게 열심히 일하는 것으로 이어졌습니다!

진짜 사랑은 항상 그렇습니다. 우리 문화에서는 ‘사랑’이라는 단어가 너무 많이 쓰이고, 솔직히 좀 가벼워져 버렸습니다. 특히 “사랑해, 하지만…” 이런 식으로 “사랑”과 “하지만”이 같이 쓰일 때 그 가벼움이 잘 드러납니다.

한번 들어보세요. 이런 말 정말 자주 나옵니다: “나는 아이들을 사랑해… 하지만 이제는 아내와 더 이상 함께 있을 수 없어.” “아내를 아직도 사랑해… 하지만 다른 사람을 만나서, 그녀와 함께 있어야 해.” “하나님을 사랑해… 하지만 하나님이 말씀하신 것을 할 수 없어. 너무 어려워.” 

신약성경이 원래 쓰인 그리스어에는 영어의 “love(사랑)”로 번역되는 여러 단어들이 있습니다. 여기(데살로니가전서 1:3)에서 쓰인 단어는 아가페(agape) 인데, 이것은 하나님 같은 사랑을 의미합니다. 조건이 없고, 제한이 없는 사랑입니다. “내가 원하는 것”이 아니라 “그 사람에게 가장 좋은 것이 무엇인가”를 생각하는 사랑입니다.

아가페 사랑에는 “하지만(but)”이 없습니다. 그냥 ‘사랑한다’. 끝!

이 사랑은 자연스럽게 열심, 섬김, 자기희생으로 이어집니다. 왜냐하면 조건 없이 사랑하기 때문에, ‘하지만’이 없기 때문입니다.

그 ‘열심히 일하는 방식’은 사람마다 다 다를 수 있어요. 왜냐하면 우리 각자는 다른 은사, 부르심, 상황, 성격을 가지고 있기 때문입니다.

어떤 사람에게는 사랑이 기도의 수고로 나타납니다. 하나님과 사람을 사랑하기 때문에, 기도로 열심히 섬기는 것이죠. 기도로 싸우는 사람은 교회 주방을 맡아 수고하는 사람이나
매주 의자를 준비하는 사람 못지않게 하나님을 위해 열심히 일하는 사람입니다. 중요한 것은, 각 사람이 하나님이 주신 섬김의 자리, 그 부르심을 찾고, 사랑으로 최선을 다해 하나님께 드리는 것입니다. 이런 섬김, 사랑으로 하는 열심은 예배입니다.

바울은 로마서에서 이렇게 말합니다: “그러므로 형제들아 내가 하나님의 모든 자비하심으로 너희를 권하노니 너희 몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물로 드리라 이는 너희가 드릴 영적 예배니라” (로마서 12:1)

무엇보다 먼저, 예배는 우리가 여기서 하는 것—음악, 찬양 이런 것들만을 의미하지 않습니다. 가장 먼저, 진짜 예배는 사랑이 열심히 섬김으로 이어지는 것입니다. 하나님께 순종하고, 드리고, 섬기고, 희생하며 사는 삶입니다.

 

세 번째로, 데살로니가전서 1장에서 설명되는 교회와 그리스도인의 모습은: 흔들리지 않는 소망 (1:3) 입니다. 직역하면 견디는 소망, 포기하지 않는 소망입니다. 이건 개인적으로도, 교회 공동체로서도 정말 중요한 부분입니다.

강하고 살아있는 교회는 소망이 가득한 교회입니다. 여러분 교회 이름에도 ‘희망(Hope)’이라는 단어가 들어가 있죠: Hope of Heaven Baptist Church 정말 멋진 이름입니다!

하지만 그 소망이 이름에만 있는 게 아니라 교회의 삶 속에서 실제로 보이려면, 소망이 무엇인지 정확히 이해해야 합니다.

소망은 막연한 ‘잘 됐으면 좋겠다’ 같은 바람이 아닙니다. 희미한 꿈 같은 것도 아닙니다. 소망은 신약성경에서 믿음만큼 중요한 단어입니다. 왜냐하면 소망은 “미래 시제로 표현되는 믿음”이라고 할 수 있기 때문입니다.

믿음은 주로 오늘, 지금에 대한 것입니다. 나는 오늘 하나님을 믿고, 오늘 필요한 모든 것을 하나님께 맡깁니다.

소망은 그 믿음을 미래로 옮겨놓는 것입니다. 아직 보이지 않는 미래와 모든 불확실함을 하나님께 맡기고 하나님이 선하시고, 하나님 계획은 완벽하고, 하나님 안에서 우리의 미래는 최고라고 믿는 것입니다.

기독교인의 소망은 흔들리지 않는 확신입니다. ‘이랬으면 좋겠다’가 아니라, 하나님이 과거에 행하신 사랑과 능력과 신실함을 믿기 때문에 가지는 확신입니다. 그래서 이 소망은 흔들리지 않습니다. 포기하지 않습니다. 상황에 흔들리지 않습니다.

그렇다고 도전이 없다는 말은 아닙니다. 하지만 기독교적 소망은 현재 어려움에 눌리지 않습니다. 오히려 하나님이 이전에 하신 일을 기억하면서, 지금은 힘들어도 하나님이 미래에도 일하실 것을 믿고 계속 소망합니다.

그래서 우리는 계속 하나님의 신실하심과 은혜의 이야기들을 나누고 기억해야 합니다. 그 하나님을 우리가 믿고 따릅니다. 오늘도, 그리고 교회의 다음 시즌도, 그 하나님을 신뢰합니다.

정리하면: 실제로 행동하는 믿음, 수고하는 사랑, 흔들리지 않는 소망 이 세 가지가 위대한 교회를 만듭니다. 이런 믿음, 사랑, 소망이 있는 교회가 진짜 그리스도의 몸인 교회입니다.

그리고 이 세 가지는 결국 …데살로니가전서 1장에 강조된 네 번째 특징, 즉 마지막 특징으로 이어집니다: 고난 속에서도 기뻐함 (1:6)

바울은 이 그리스도인들에게 이렇게 말합니다: “또 너희는 많은 환난 가운데서 성령의 기쁨으로 말씀을 받아 ...”

어떻게 고난 중에 기뻐할 수 있을까요? 

여기서도 우리가 “기쁨”이 무엇인지 제대로 이해해야 합니다. 기쁨은 계속 웃고 농담하고, 늘 밝고 긍정적이고, 어떤 어려움이 와도 항상 기운 넘치게 지내는 것을 의미하지 않습니다.

기쁨은, 고난과 재난과 아픔 속에서도 여전히 하나님의 은혜의 놀라움을 보고, 삶과 관계의 아름다움을 볼 수 있는 깊은 마음의 상태입니다. 그리고 그 속에서 하나님이 주신 축복과 미래에 대한 소망을 감사하게 되는 것입니다.

이 편지가 쓰인 원래 그리스어를 다시 보면, “기쁨”과 “은혜”라는 단어가 매우 비슷합니다.
둘 다 기본적으로 charis 라는 단어에서 나왔습니다. (어미만 조금 다름)

즉, 은혜는 기쁨을 가져오는 것입니다. 여기서 고난 속 기쁨의 비밀이 드러납니다. 고통과 시험과 슬픔 속에서도, 죄인인 나에게 베푸신 하나님의 놀라운 은혜를 계속 바라보는 것입니다.

이 은혜—내가 받을 자격이 전혀 없는데도 하나님이 주신 사랑과 용납과 친밀함은—인생이 힘들다고 해서 사라지지 않습니다. 가끔 그렇게 느껴질 때가 있어도, 그 은혜는 없어지지 않습니다.

고난 속에서 기쁨을 아는 비밀은 그 엄청난 하나님의 은혜에 시선을 고정하는 것입니다. 하나님이 내 삶에 부어주신 은혜는 한 번이 아니라 계속 되고 있습니다.

제가 발견한 게 있습니다. 가장 큰 고난 속에서, 가장 깊고 소중한 기쁨이 찾아오는 순간이 있습니다. 이건 좀 역설적이지만 정말 깊은 진리입니다. 우리가 너무 익숙해져서 쉽게 당연하게 여겼던 은혜들—가족과의 사랑스러운 관계, 하나님의 창조의 아름다움, 친구 안기기, 좋은 식사, 웃음, 아이들과 잠들기 전에 함께 기도하는 시간…

이런 일상 속 축복들이 고난과 두려움, 상실과 아픔의 순간에 더 깊고 선명한 기쁨으로 다가옵니다. 그것들은 사막 속의 오아시스가 됩니다.

기쁨과 고난 사이에는 뭔가 신비한 연결이 있는 것 같습니다. 그렇다고 고난을 멋지다고 말하는 건 아닙니다 — 고난은 정말 힘들고 두렵습니다.

하지만… 가장 어두운 순간 속에서도, 하나님과 함께 걸어갈 때, 그리고 하나님이 사람들을 통해 흘려보내는 사랑과 은혜를 경험할 때, 우리는 놀라운 기쁨과 축복을 만날 수 있습니다.

실제로 행동하는 믿음…
섬김으로 이어지는 사랑…
흔들리지 않는 소망…
그리고 고난 속에서도 기뻐함…

이것이 교회가 가져야 할 모습입니다. 

그리고 교회 안에 이런 모습이 자라날 때 생기는 열매는? 효과적인 선교(사역) 입니다.

바울은 이렇게 말합니다: “주의 말씀이 너희에게로부터 마게도냐와 아가야에만 들릴 뿐 아니라 하나님을 향하는 너희 믿음의 소문이 각처에 퍼졌습니다!”

여러분은 유명해졌습니다! 하나님이 여러분 안에서 일하고 계시고, 그분의 변화시키는 능력이 여러분 삶에서 드러나기 때문에, 여러분은 세상에 영향을 주고 있습니다.

행동으로 증명되는 믿음, 수고하고 희생하는 사랑, 흔들리는 세상 속에서도 견고한 소망, 고난 중에도 넘치는 깊은 기쁨… 이것들이 사람들을 놀라게 하고, 세상의 관심을 끌고, 사람들을 예수님께 이끌고 있습니다.

효과적인 선교의 기초는 사람들이 원하고 매력을 느낄 만한 것이 우리 안에 있는 것입니다. 믿음, 사랑, 소망, 기쁨 — 이것들이 사람들을 끌어옵니다.

그래서 저는 여러분이 그런 교회, 그런 공동체가 되기 위해 계속 노력하기를 권하고 싶습니다. 하나님이 여러분을 변화시키고 자라게 하시도록 계속 초대하고, 마음을 열고, 순종하세요.

하나님의 영광과, 교회를 세우기 위해!
